Wuhan University (WHU), established in 1893, is a prestigious comprehensive national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It is a member of the "Double First-Class" initiative, "985 Project", and "211 Project". The university traces its origins to the Ziqiang Institute founded by Zhang Zhidong, Governor of Hubei and Hunan Provinces during the late Qing Dynasty. After several transformations, it was officially named National Wuhan University in 1928, making it one of China's first national universities. By 1946, the university had developed into a comprehensive institution with six major faculties: Liberal Arts, Law, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, and Medicine. In 2000, Wuhan University merged with Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University to form the new Wuhan University. The university covers an area of 5,195 acres with a building area of 2.8 million square meters. It comprises six academic divisions (Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, Engineering, Information Science, and Medicine) with 34 schools and departments, as well as three Grade-A tertiary hospitals. The university offers 127 undergraduate programs, 59 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 49 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, and 46 postdoctoral research stations. With over 3,800 full-time faculty members, including more than 2,930 professors and associate professors, the university boasts 11 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 academicians of the European Academy of Sciences, 9 senior professors in humanities and social sciences, and numerous other distinguished scholars.
