The Bachelor of Marine Biology and Climate Change at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is the only degree of its kind in Sydney. Marine ecosystems supply about half the oxygen we breathe and absorb greenhouse gases, so this programme trains you to investigate, understand, and protect marine environments under climate change. You begin with the Scientist’s Tool Kit in biology, chemistry, and the natural world, then specialise in coral reefs, ocean systems, fish biology, aquatic ecosystems, marine algae, GIS and remote sensing, and environmental protection. Learning combines cutting-edge technologies with traditional and analytical methods, plus access to the Climate Change Cluster (C3), internships, and fieldwork in NSW and the Great Barrier Reef. Options and transdisciplinary electives sit inside this structure so you can add policy, law, or business skills while meeting UTS course rules at the City campus.
Scientist’s Tool Kit (Environmental Sciences)
Your first year completes the Scientist’s Tool Kit shared across undergraduate UTS Science degrees. Design, Data, and Decisions and Scientific Perspectives for Global Issues sit alongside chemistry, the biosphere, nature and evolution, cell biology and genetics, molecular biology, and environmental chemistry so you build a toolkit of technical, analytical, and workplace skills. Completing this foundation prepares you to interpret environmental data, communicate scientific ideas, and collaborate before you specialise in marine ecosystems, climate impacts, and ocean systems across the rest of the degree at the City campus.
Core (Marine Biology)
Core Marine Biology subjects combine specialist study of coral reef and aquatic ecosystems with ocean systems and climate change, marine algae and productivity, fish biology and fisheries, plant physiology, ecology, and environmental protection. You also build practical skills in urban sustainability and resilience plus geographic information systems and remote sensing, preparing you to assess and respond to climate impacts on life-sustaining marine environments. Completing the core, with expert teaching, Climate Change Cluster research access, and hands-on fieldwork and internships in NSW and the Great Barrier Reef, equips you as an environmental science professional ready to protect, manage, and restore marine ecosystems in Australia and internationally.
Options & transdisciplinary electives
Options and transdisciplinary electives let you customise the degree across policy, law, business, and other UTS faculties, pursue a professional internship for academic credit, or broaden collaboration skills while meeting course rules. Choices may include Business and Social Impact, Climate Justice and Climate Policy, Ecological Genetics, Environmental Planning and Law, Environmental Remediation, Global Economies, Global Governance, and transdisciplinary electives. These sit inside the programme structure rather than as separate majors, so you can prepare for careers beyond traditional marine science without leaving the Marine Biology and Climate Change core.
