Year one provides the foundations for you to take advantage of the creative and intellectual benefits of higher education. BMus students must take the required year-long core module Elements of Tonal Theory. You must also choose at least one elective core from Writing about Music, Case Studies in Music History, or Music as Culture, building historical and stylistic awareness across Western and non-Western, popular, jazz, film, and music theatre traditions. Optional modules cover composition, solo performance, ensemble work, conducting, aural training, and jazz and popular music techniques, and you are encouraged to join university-led core ensembles.

Core modules for year one

In year two, you consolidate your strengths while maintaining activity across a breadth of disciplines, choosing modules from at least three of four groups: Analytical and Critical Skills, Composition and Production, Practical Musicianship, and Musicology and Placement. Business of Music modules help you understand branches of the music profession and include a short work placement in the spring semester. Year two modules are extensively research-led, developing critical and professional skills for advanced study and industry pathways.

In year three, you again choose from at least three of the four subject groups and may study up to two major project modules: Dissertation, Project in Ethnomusicology, Project in Music Analysis, Composition 3 (Composition Portfolio), or the public Recital module available exclusively to BMus students. Year three continues to focus on research-led teaching, allowing you to specialise in performance, composition, analysis, or academic musicology while working closely with staff on advanced projects.
