I. Program Introduction

To deepen educational cooperation with Belt and Road partner countries and cultivate talented professionals, the Chinese Ministry of Education established the “Silk Road” Chinese Government Scholarship in 2017. This program enables selected high-level Chinese universities to recruit outstanding youth from partner countries of the Belt and Road Initiative to pursue academic degrees in China.


II. Application Path and Deadline

Applicants must register and submit their information via the Tianjin University International Student Management System (with assistance from E‑Square). Once admitted and nominated under the Silk Road CSC scholarship by the university, they must also apply online through the China Scholarship Council (CSC) portal at http://www.csc.edu.cn/laihua/ (Tianjin University institutional code: 10056, select scholarship category B).

Application deadline: Early May (precise date to be confirmed through contact with E‑Square)

IV. Eligibility Criteria

  1. Citizenship: Must come from one of these countries: Pakistan, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Morocco, Nigeria, Thailand, Nepal, or Russia.

  2. Academic background & age:

    • Undergraduate: high school diploma, age ≤ 25

    • Master’s: bachelor’s degree, age ≤ 35

    • Doctoral: master’s degree, age ≤ 40
      Applicants must have good moral character, be in good health, and agree to follow Chinese laws and Tianjin University’s rules.

  3. Language requirement:

    • Chinese-taught programs: HSK Level 5 with at least 180 points (exemptions for native Chinese speakers or prior Chinese-taught education, upon university verification)

    • English-taught programs: IELTS ≥ 6.0 or TOEFL ≥ 80 (exemptions for applicants from English-native countries recognized by the university, or those who previously completed a full English-taught degree)

  4. Good conduct, health, and compliance with Chinese law and regional university regulations.


V. Scholarship Benefits & Standards

  1. Full waiver of tuition and on-campus accommodation fees.

  2. Monthly living stipend:

    • Undergraduate: RMB 2,500/month

    • Master’s: RMB 3,000/month

    • Doctoral: RMB 3,500/month

  3. Comprehensive medical insurance provided by the Chinese Government Scholarship program.

VII. Required Documents

Applicants must upload scanned original or notarized documents (in PDF) as follows:

  1. High school (for undergraduate) or university diploma (for postgraduate), or proof of expected graduation; original or notarized copies.

  2. Complete academic transcripts or official standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, A‑Level, IB, etc.)

  3. Passport information page (valid through at least March 1, 2026); former Chinese nationals or those with parents holding Chinese nationality must also provide proof of renunciation of citizenship and entry/exit records.

  4. Language proficiency certificates (HSK, IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent proof)

  5. Curriculum vitae with continuous study/work history since high school

  6. “Intent to Supervise Foreign Student” form (for Master’s and PhD applicants) — optional but strongly recommended if available; contact E‑Square for faculty details

  7. Study plan (≥ 600 words for undergraduates, ≥ 800 words for Master’s, ≥ 1,000 words for PhD) in Chinese or English

  8. Two recommendation letters (Master’s & PhD only) from professors (≥ associate professor rank) in Chinese or English

  9. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (dated after Oct 1, 2024)

  10. For those already studying in China: passport visa page and school-issued certificate of good academic conduct

  11. Certificate of no criminal record (issued within 6 months); acceptable substitute for current students

  12. Applicants under age 18 as of Sept 1, 2025: notarized guardianship certificate with guardian who is a permanent resident of Tianjin

  13. Applicants who formerly held Chinese citizenship or have Chinese-parentage nationality: proof of naturalization, renunciation documents, or birth certificate plus China entry/exit visa records for past four years

  14. Awards/certificates (for undergraduates); published research or acceptance letters (required for PhD; optional for Master’s)

  15. Other attachments: signed CSC scholarship application form, architecture applicants: digital portfolio and video introduction

VIII. Application Notes

  1. All documents must be official originals or notarized copies in Chinese or English. Non-Chinese/English documents require notarized translation.

  2. Scan in color using a scanner; mobile photos or photocopies not accepted.

  3. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

  4. Applicants may be asked to provide official hard-copy documents or certifications for verification; falsification will result in disqualification.


IX. Application & Selection Timeline (tentative, subject to updates, *Check with E-Square)

1. Document submission period: From now until April 25
2. University document review, interview and/or written test: April 1 – June 10
‌(Interview schedules will be communicated via email/application portal. Non-participation is deemed waiver of scholarship eligibility.)
3. National CSC review and final decision: June 11 – June 30 (timeline set by CSC)
4. Admission notification release: July 1 – July 31(including official Admission Notice and JW201 visa application form)
5. Registration & enrollment: Late August to early September
