Candidates must be officially recognized athletes by the Malaysian National Sports Council and their respective Sports Associations, representing either:

• National Athlete - represents Malaysia in regional and international sporting competitions, tournaments, and events
• State Athlete - represents their state in national-level sporting competitions, tournaments, and events

• Continuous evaluation of sports achievements is required for bursary renewal
