Northwest University (NWU), located in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, is a comprehensive national key university jointly established by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Shaanxi Province. It is a national "Double First-Class" construction university and a national "211 Project" key construction university. The university traces its origins to Shaanxi University Hall and the Shuntong Branch of the Imperial University of Peking established in 1902. It was renamed Northwest University in 1912, and became National Northwest University in 1923. In 1937, National Peking University, National Peking Normal University, Beiyang Engineering College, and Peking Research Institute moved to Shaanxi and formed National Xi'an Provisional University, which was renamed National Northwest Associated University in 1938, and restored to National Northwest University in 1939. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it became a comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education. It was renamed Northwest University in 1950, and transferred to Shaanxi Province in 1958. It was designated as a national key university in 1978. The university now has three campuses: Taibai Campus, Taoyuan Campus, and Chang'an Campus, with a total area of more than 2,360 acres. The university has 24 colleges (departments) and a graduate school, 1 Sino-foreign cooperative education institution, and 6 non-directly affiliated hospitals. It offers 88 undergraduate programs, of which 32 have been selected as national first-class undergraduate program construction sites. The university has 24 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 36 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, and 18 professional degree authorization categories. It has 1 first-level national key discipline (covering 5 second-level disciplines), 4 second-level national key disciplines, and 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, with 24 postdoctoral research stations. The university has more than 3,000 faculty and staff, including 4 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 10 dual-appointed academicians (professors), 1 academician of the International Academy of the History of Science, 20 "Ten Thousand Talents Program" project recipients, 12 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 12 recipients of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 17 "Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Project" recipients, 4 national teaching masters, 25 recipients of the Ministry of Education's New Century Excellent Talents Support Program, and 6 "Young and Middle-aged Science and Technology Innovation Leading Talents" from the Ministry of Science and Technology.
