Xiamen University 2025 Undergraduate Admissions Guide for International Students
About Xiamen University (XMU)
Founded in 1921 by renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, Xiamen University (XMU) is the first university in modern Chinese history to be established by an overseas Chinese. It is a key university under China’s “Project 211” and “Project 985,” and is included in the national “Double First-Class” initiative to build world-class universities and disciplines. Located along Xiamen Bay with scenic surroundings of mountains and sea, XMU is acclaimed as one of the most beautiful universities in the world.
XMU consists of Siming Campus, Zhangzhou Campus, Xiang’an Campus, and the Malaysia Campus. The university has a graduate school, 6 academic divisions, 34 colleges/departments, and 17 research institutes. Nineteen of its disciplines rank among the top 1% globally in the ESI database, with Chemistry, Materials Science, and Engineering in the top 0.1%. In 2022, six disciplines—Chemistry, Oceanography, Biology, Ecology, Statistics, and Education—were selected for China’s list of world-class disciplines. The university has nearly 3,000 full-time faculty members, of which 74% are professors or associate professors, and 35 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. XMU currently hosts over 46,000 students, including more than 21,000 undergraduates, 19,000 master’s students, and 5,700 doctoral students.
XMU embraces an open policy in international cooperation, with over 270 partner institutions abroad. It actively promotes international Chinese language education, having established 14 Confucius Institutes, 1 Chinese Language and Culture Research Center, and 42 Confucius Classrooms across 12 countries on five continents. Among "Double First-Class" universities, XMU has one of the highest numbers and widest distribution of Confucius Institutes. In 2013, XMU Malaysia was officially approved, making XMU the first Chinese university to open an independent campus abroad.
